The 5th century is the period from 401 to 500 in accordance with the Julian calendar in Anno Domini/Common Era. OverviewThis century is noted for being a time of repeated disaster and instability both internally and externally for the Western Roman Empire, which finally unravelled, and came to an end in AD 476. The west was ruled by a succession of weak emperors, and true power began to fall increasingly into the hands of powerful generals. Internal instability and pressing military problems caused by foreign invaders finally resulted in the sacking of Rome by a Visigoth army in 410. Some recovery was made in the following decades, but the Western Empire received a serious blow when another barbarian group, the Vandals occupied Carthage, capital of the extremely important province of Africa, a major supplier of wealth and grain. Attempts to retake the province were interrupted by the invasions of the Huns under Attila. After Attila's final defeat and death both Eastern and Western empires joined forces for a final assault on Vandal North Africa, but their campaign was a spectacular failure. From Wikipedia under the

What was the Circus Maximus used for after Rome collapsed in the 5th century CE? Asked by KateKateKate - Thu Nov 19 09:13:02 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. The Circus Maximus was used for Chariot Racing. The last known race was held in 549 AD when Totila king of the Ostrogoths ruled in Rome. When the Circus was abandoned, it was looted for building material for housing & such. All that's left of it is the race track now covered with grass & it's used as a park in the centre of Rome. The area is still used to entertain the Romans; concerts & celebrations & such. The Live 8 concert of 2005 & Rome's World Cup victory celebration of 2006 was held there & the british Rock group "Genesis" finished their European "Turn it on again" tour of 2007 there with a free concert... just to name a few examples. Answered by Artorius - Thu Nov 19 09:48:30 2009 I am looking for 5th and 6th century info on the monastic site at Iona? Q. I am trying to find information on the that time period specifically, and more specifically what life was like, wether or not there was church for the people of the area or if it was designated for only the monastic lifestyle. I have found some sites, but they are more for tourism or discuss St. Columba more than the site itself. Asked by Pennywise - Sun Nov 2 15:24:58 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. There's not much known about Iona's history during this period, as far as I can tell. St. Columba settled on Iona in 563 C.E. after being exiled from Ireland. He established a monastery there with 12 companions. According to this physical structure was a "small monastery from wood, wattle and daub." This structure no longer exists, as it was later replaced with a stone structure which is still standing. I don't think at this point there was a public church of any kind, and in fact, it's my understanding that during the time you're referring to, there probably wouldn't have been a congregation on the island to join them. Old stories claim that druids were living on the island when Columba arrived, but it would appear that Columba… [cont.] Answered by Fashion Challenged - Wed Nov 5 22:09:46 2008 The Iron Pillar of Unrusted Steel in New Delhi, which stands since the 5th century. The rustless nature of the pillar is attributed to low carbon and high phosphorus content of the iron, microstructural heterogeneity and adhered protective film.
