A century (from the Latin centum, meaning one hundred) is one hundred consecutive years. It is also a Roman term. Centuries are numbered ordinally in English and many other languages (e.g. "the seventh century AD/CE").

Start and end in the Gregorian Calendar

According to the Gregorian calendar, the 1st century A.D./C.E. started on January 1, 1 and ended on December 31, 100. The 2nd century started at year 101, the third at 201, etc. The n-th century started/will start on the year 100×n-99 and ends in 100×n . A century will only include one year, the centennial year, that starts with the century's number (e.g. 1900 is the final year in the 19th century).

1st century CE and BCE

There is no "zeroth century" in between the first century BCE and the first century AD. Also, there is no 0 AD. The Julian calendar "jumps" from 1 BC to 1 AD. The first century BC includes the years 100 BCE to 1 BCE. Other centuries BC follow the same pattern.

how did people dress in Greece during the 11th and 12th centuries?
Q. I'm trying to find a good reference for the style of dress in Greece during the late Byzantine period, or the 11th and 12th centuries.

A. Draped garments with pins holding them together on both shoulders or one side-think toga party. Gold finely engraved jewelry for those who could afford it. Small hoops or teardrop earrings and cuff like bracelets or bangles. Hair would be pulled up with straps or pins to hold it together. Flat open sandals for the most part too.

Q. Why and how has the Bible survived and even flourished in spite of centuries of worldwide attempts to destroy and ban its message?

A. Throughout history, the Bible has been ridiculed, banned and burned. Voltaire, the noted French infidel who died in 1778, said in one hundred years from his time Christianity would be swept from existence and passed into history. In my opinion, the Bible has survived the test of time because it is God's blueprint for Christian living. The Bible survives because the faithful cherish the messages it gives us. The Bible tells of the history of God leading up to Christ, the life of Christ and then the beginning of the Christian Church. These are all very important things because we are able to read firsthand accounts of people who have encountered God on a one-on-one basis. Even Jesus Christ himself! Many martyrs have died defending their… [cont.]

Q. Explain the historical circumstances surrounding the Medici s rise to power in the 14th and 15th centuries? How were they able to build support, fight off rival families and control the government in Republican Florence?

A. The family originaly became prominent via Giovanni di Bicci's creation of a family bank (not a simple savings and loan, but an investment bank) in the early 15th century. The situation was that they had accumulated wealth via the wool trade and other ventures, and my guess is that they had, like some other "new rich" families at the time, done this starting in the late 14th century, after the Black Death reduced agricultural labor forces and vastly encouraged urban development. The history of the Medici is a long and complex story, too long and complex to be described here. There are many important books on the subject, easily found in libraries, but you can make a minor start with the site below. But please: don't think you can learn… [cont.]
