The Middle Ages of European history (adjective form medieval or mediæval) was a period in history which lasted for roughly a millennium, commonly dated from the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century to the beginning of the Early Modern Period in the 16th century, marked by the division of Western Christianity in the Reformation, the rise of humanism in the Italian Renaissance, and the beginnings of European overseas expansion. There is some variation in the dating of the edges of these periods which is due mainly to differences in specialization and focus of individual scholars. The Middle Ages form the middle period in a traditional schematic division of European history into three "ages": the classical civilization of Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the modern period. The idea of such a periodization is attributed to Flavio Biondo, an Italian Renaissance humanist historian but commonly seen periodization ranges span the years ca. 400–476 AD (the sackings of Rome by the Visigoths to the deposing of Romulus Augustus) to ca. 1453–1517 (the Fall of Constantinople to the Protestant Reformation begun with Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses). Dates are approximate, and are based upon nuanced arguments; for other dating schemes and the reasoning behind them, see "periodization issues", below. The Middle Ages witnessed the first sustained urbanization of northern and western Europe. Many modern European countries owe their origins to events unfolding in the Middle Ages; present European political boundaries are, in many regards, the result of the military and dynastic outcomes during this tumultuous period. As noted by previous answerer - - - Market was a popular choice. Early people, especially the English, tend to be literal. Often Main Street was simply that, the Main Street and yes that word was used a lot. But the most common name for the main road through town was the High Road - - - a term one still finds in towns big & small especially in England. (the song, 'I'll take the High Road, you take the Low Road,' comes to mind // many towns hat two main streets, the High and the Low, with smaller lanes in between) Another popular choice - - - Broad Street or Broad Way, and after that the ever popular King's Road or King's Way, or in Spain, El Camino Royale, the Royal Passage / Road... As for Market - - - in a bustling port such as… [cont.] Answered by bearstirringfromcave - Fri Jul 27 09:55:02 2007 How did the Crusades help to begin the change from medieval society into modern?
Q. I know that the Christians didn't win the Crusades, but they are often called successful failures. I think this is because they were the first step in the change from a medieval society to a modern society but I don't know all of the reasons or details. They helped commerce and undermined feudalism. Asked by Serena - Thu Aug 21 23:46:44 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. If you look up the Renaissance, which means to bridge the time gap between medieval and modern days, then you will be able to find your answer. Sorry, I don't have time to look it up right now b/c I am doing my school work, but I didn't want you to start getting some crazy answers. So just look up the Renaissance and you will be in great shape. Good luck! Answered by Graciie - Fri Aug 22 00:24:22 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Medieval"
