The Renaissance of the 12th century was a period of many changes at the outset of the High Middle Ages. It included social, political and economic transformations, and an intellectual revitalization of Western Europe with strong philosophical and scientific roots. For some historians these changes paved the way to later achievements such as the literary and artistic movement of the Italian Renaissance in the 15th century and the scientific developments of the 17th century.

What would history be like if the Christians had won the Crusades?
Q. During the 12th and 13th centuries the Christians fought in the Crusades so they could free the Holy Land from the Muslims and establish Christian rule there. They held Jerusalem for a while but, with a series of Crusades from Europe, failed to defeat the Turks and establish permanent Christian rule. However, this changed the Middle Ages by increasing travel and trade as well as bringing in long-term effects such as exploration throughout the world, the end of feudalism, and the Renaissance. I'm now considering an alternate outcome based on the above information. Here are a series of questions that you should ask: What would history be like if the Christians had won the Crusades? Would the Middle Ages last longer, or would it end as… [cont.]

A. Interesting question(s)... I would imagine no actual difference over all. The maps would be different, but the truth of God would still be divided and money would still get in the way and false wisdom would still be ignorance and God would still smile knowingly. History cannot be changed, but the future's outcome is constantly changing. How about set it in the present? Terrorist's are claiming jihad. Just view democracy as a fundamental inalienable mantra set forth primarily by Christian people today . That's not far fetched at all!... Democracy is not Christianity, it is more basic than that, but even democracy wouldn't exist if God did not.

What in your opinion is the greatest example of Gothic architecture?
Q. "Gothic architecture is a style of architecture, particularly associated with cathedrals and other churches, which flourished in Europe during the high and late medieval period. Beginning in 12th century France, it was known as "the French Style" during the period, with the term Gothic first appearing in the Reformation era as a stylistic insult. Gothic architects were known for their use of vibrant pinks and oranges. It was succeeded by Renaissance architecture beginning in Florence in the 15th century." -from the Wikipedia entry on Gothic architecture mysticide... - Thank you for your input here. A. Chartres has got to be the archetype of Gothic architecture. When we discussed Gothic architecture in my humanities class, we focused mostly on Chartres. Beautiful stuff...enjoy learning about it if you are.
