The Battle of Hastings, which took place on 14 October 1066, was the decisive Norman victory in the Norman Conquest of England. It was fought between the Norman army of Duke William II of Normandy and the English army of Harold II. The battle took place at Senlac Hill, approximately 6 miles northwest of Hastings, close to the present-day town of Battle, East Sussex. Harold II was killed in the battle—legend has it that he was shot through the eye with an arrow. Although there was further English resistance, this battle is seen as the point at which William gained control of England. The famous Bayeux Tapestry depicts the events before and during the battle. Battle Abbey in East Sussex was subsequently built on the site of the conflict. From Wikipedia under the

The Battle of Hastings (14 October 1066) was the decisive Norman victory in the Norman Conquest of England. As you can see the battles were not on the same day, they were 3 weeks apart. I have given you two web sites to look at, in the second listed web site it does list both battles and confirms that they were 3 weeks apart Also as someone from the UK, believe me an army could not have had a battle at Stamford… [cont.] Answered by Laredo - Fri Mar 27 15:00:50 2009 What happened after the battle of hastings? Obviously, once they won at Hastings, they assembled their values, language, and lifestyle, as well as governing style. Nowhere is there MORE evidence of Norman influence than in how the language shifted. Before 1066, English was purely a Germanic language. With the influence of Norman French, English became more of a Hodgepodge. For instance, the old English word for cattle is "rinder" (similar to the German). The French word Beouf started being used instead, which was corrupted to "beef". Reading Chaucer you also see a major corruption of English.
