Do you know what Parsley & Celery are called in the Hokkien dialect? There seems to be some confusion out here?
Q. Or perhaps in Bahasa Malaysia? Thanks.
Asked by winterlotus - Sat Jan 30 02:49:18 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Chinese parsley is ' wan sui ', used ( but not anymore) to garnish the chicken for Chicken Rice. The other type is ' ang moh wan sui' used to garnish Western style dishes. Chinese celery is ' kin chai ' also known as daun sup because it's used to garnish soup. The other type of celery ( for celery sticks ) is ' tua kin chai' or ' ang moh kin chai'. Hope this helps!

A. Good question. It depends on which parts of Malaysia. In Penang you hear more Hokkien being spoken. My friend is researching this and give you a full answer. Here is his answer. The Chinese who came and settled in S.E. Asia were mostly from the Southern Coastal region, roughly stretching from the City of Foochow all the way along the coast right up to the border with Vietnam encompassing the whole of the Southernmost island of Hainan. Foochow is the ancient cultural and political capital of Fujian (Hokkien) province The Hokkien spoken in Foochow are mainly Hock-Chews and the Hock-Chai which the ordinary 'Amoy' Hokkiens of S'pore find hard to understand and speak. Hokkien is both a very broad-based description of the dialect spoken… [cont.]
