The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a unique numeric commercial book identifier based upon the 9-digit Standard Book Numbering (SBN) code created by Gordon Foster, now Emeritus Professor of Statistics at Trinity College, Dublin, for the booksellers and stationers W.H. Smith and others in 1966.

The 10-digit ISBN format was developed by the International Organization for Standardization and was published in 1970 as international standard ISO 2108. (However, the 9-digit SBN code was used in the United Kingdom until 1974.) Currently, the ISO’s TC 46/SC 9 is responsible for the ISBN. The ISO on-line facility only refers back to 1978.

Since 1 January 2007, ISBNs have contained 13 digits, a format that is compatible with Bookland EAN-13s.

Occasionally, a book may appear without a printed ISBN if it is printed privately or the author does not follow the usual ISBN procedure; however, this is usually later rectified.

A similar numeric identifier, the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), identifies periodical publications such as magazines.

What is the ISBN number and title of this drink book I bought in New Orleans?
Q. 2 years ago I bought a drink book in New Orleans. I lost it, and I need to get another one. I dont remember the title, i think it was Bourbon Street Bartender or something along those lines. It is a paperback book, small, purple cover and about 200 different drinks in it. It is not New Orleans Bartender, that is a different book. Can you help my find the title and or ISBN number of the book I'm talking about?

A. I think this is the one you're talking about, but this is the only site I've found it listed. It's only 36 pages so probably falls under the heading of booklet rather than book and seems to be more of a souvenir type item than book per se. At least you can see if it's the same one. The title is indeed Bourbon Street Bartender. I didn't try the contact links but that might be worth a shot. I note the calendar they offer is from 2008.

How do I get a ISBN for a book that is not a self publishing ISBN.?
Q. I want to market my own novel. I do not want to self publish at least not in the normal sense. I want a regular ISBN number like on most books that are published. How do I get it? How do I do it?

A. You may obtain an ISBN through R.R. Bowker at this link: There is not a real differentiation between a self-published ISBN and any other type. They are simply unique identifiers used to distinguish one title from another, like a social security number, as books, like people, can have similar or the same names. Each publishing house has their own prefixes (Dorrance Publishing for example uses both 0-8059- and 1-4349-), and unless you have your book produced though an existing publisher with its own ISBN numbers, you will more than likely need to obtain one on your own. In any case, please be assured that one ISBN number obtained through R. R. Bowker is as legitimate as any other.

Do book stores have the right to stop customers from viewing the ISBN for books?
Q. I needed to purchase some text books for college, and I wanted to write the ISBN for each book that I needed so that I can see whether the books were cheaper on line or at the college book store. Unfortunately, the college book store refused to let me see and write the ISBN number. I'm assuming that they are just doing this to prevent me from finding it cheaper and buying it somewhere else. So, I am wondering whether or not we have the right to view the ISBN for books.

A. You should be able to look up the ISBNs online. How would the bookstore know that is what you are doing? Why don't they have the books up on the shelves. I also think that there is no legal reason for them to be required to share ISBN numbers with you. Perhaps your teachers would give them to you? At my school the lists of books have ISBNs on them.
