What is up with the pope and ordering torture?
Q. I was reading how in the "old days" the pope would order 'sinners' to be tortured until they confessed their sins. They would lay you on a table and stretch your body from both ends and the torture could go on for days... And then later on in America, you would have the witch burnings. What is up with that? Can anyone give me scripture where this stuff is ok?

A. In the inquisitons, the Church conducted the trials. The civil government (king) handed out the punishment. When the Pope found out the Inquisitions were being done for political purposes, he ended them. The witch trials in America were Protestant atrocities.

What were the taxes that the holy roman empire have to pay the pope in the early 1500s?
Q. Doing a history essay, and I need some examples of the sort of taxes the people and the clergy in the Holy Roman Empire had to pay the pope in Rome? BEFORE 1517 Thanks in advance.

A. No taxes were paid to Rome, since Rome was never a part of the HRE. To keep this in mind, remember Voltaire's famous saying about the HRE: "It's neither Holy, nor Roman, nor an Empire."

Why does the Pope have to speak Latin when originally Christians spoke the Semitic language?
Q. Originally, during Jesus' time most people in the middle east (the place where Jesus lived) spoke the Semitic language. Especially Aramaic, which is similar to Arabic, so the language that Muslim religious leaders speak are more accurate than the pope's. On my opinion, I think it doesn't matter what language you speak to god, just as long as your praying. But, all I want to know is why does the people of the roman catholic church have to speak Latin?
Asked by . - Thu Dec 11 20:29:19 2008 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments

A. The key is in the word "Roman" Catholic. The Vatican is a Roman place so they speak Latin. It's that simple. It's curious, though, that for centuries, Latin was considered a "holy" language. It was just until recently that Catholic churches started doing their Mass in local languages rather than Latin. Catholicism is a merger of Christianity and the Roman culture. Scholars explain that the Roman culture did have a huge influence on Christianity. In fact, Christianity was modified to fit the Roman empire!

A. He is Asexual in a sense, as he doesnt succumb to any sexual behaviours or thoughts. That is the way it is meant to be anyway. The vow of chastity is also meant to include masturbation and so on. They are meant to deny their sexual thoughts and feelings, and channel that energy into loving God and serving the church.

How much of a scandal would it be if the Pope absconded with a mistress?
Q. Would the Catholic Church collapse? Would they be able to appoint another Pope or a Regent Pope? Could the Pope keep a mistress in the Vatican?
Asked by Astrotrain - Mon Jul 13 17:38:31 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. "Would the Catholic Church collapse?" --- NO. As Catholics, we need to put our faith in the teachings, not the man. Men can fall... but GOD's message does not falter nor waver in the midst of scandal. GOD promised to be with HIS Church (Catholic) forever, as such, our Church will stand strong for thousands of years to come, as it has for the past 2000 years... And...No, the POPE cannot have a mistress, and she would surely not be kept in the Vatican... May GOD have mercy on your soul...

Will Obama meetup with the pope sometime in the near future to seal the deal?
Q. Obama is brokering a deal to blast McCain out of the running. He has been to Israel and Berlin. The only thing left is the Pope. Obama wants to find out who will make him the best offer as commander in chief. Will Obama get a better offer from the Jews or the Christians? Whose side will America be on?

A. LOL! Obama doesn't need the Pope or anybody to help him "knock out McCain". Grandpa will knock himself out, even with race bigots voting for him. Obama has been criticized for not supporting Israel enough, then when he tries to amend the situation, anti-Semites get their underoos waded. Oh well, he doesn't need the David Duke vote. The economy is in the tank and the G.O.P. and their non-stop tax cuts for the rich are on their way out.

How come some people (Including the Pope) refuse to give Turkey the right to enter the European Union?
Q. Turkey is one of the most secular countries of Europe. Turkey even legalized gay marriage, unlike the US. The people over there are also pretty secular and moderate Muslims. I think it is pure discrimination not to let them in just because the country is 98% Muslims. And Pope Benedict made a remark about Turkey not being able to join the union before, he eventually apologized and payed a visit, but the Turks protested his visit.

A. You provided the answer yourself, lovely Layla. People discriminate unfairly, and I support Turkey's entry into the EU. If countries north of it can join, then it, being roughly on the same longitude, should join as well. Kudos to them for keeping a secular government secular!

A. His main significance in the Catholic chuirch is as the Pope who "decreed" that the Pope was infallible. It is probable that he did use the structure of the Roman empire as a basis for the structure of the Church - after all he had lived all his life under that system and knew it much better than any other (my only hesitation is saying that he admired the system was that by the time of his reign as Pope the Roman Empire had begun its decline and was corrupt.)

What the heck is going on with the Pope and Muslims?
Q. The bombing of Catholic churches and shooting of Catholic religious figures is a little silly and ridiculous. The pope should not have to apologize. What's he going to say anyways, "Sorry for making comments on Muslim violence that created violence in the name of Allah"? In my humble opinion, every single organized religion should be outlawed. All it does is create problems in countries and within governments.
Asked by jcrewcatt - Thu Sep 21 11:00:03 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This isn't about religion. This is about a large group of people who are too thinned skin and who think violence is an appropriate reaction whenever someone says something you don't like. It's part of the culture, though. Listen to the leaders of the major Muslim nations. They always go completely overboard in their rhetoric. It's going to be a long long time before things get better. These people are still living with attitudes that most of the West moved past about 100 years ago.

This is what God says: Romans 3:23 23for <> have sinned and fall short of the glory of God 1John 1:8-10 8If we claim to be without sin, we "deceive" ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.

Who was the Pope that invented the story that the Mother Mary went to heaven after she died?
Q. The Bible makes no reference to when or how she died, so where did this story come from? Is this just another example of how religious propaganda creates it's own history with no regard to the truth? Do people believe this story just because the Pope declared it to be true?

A. Catholics believe in the assumption of the body of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven after her death. John 19:26-27 states: When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son." Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother." And from that hour the disciple (John) took her into his home. The minutes of the Ecumenical Council of Ephesus in 431 C.E. indicate that four or six years after the death and resurrection of Jesus, John and the Virgin Mary came together to Ephesus, and for a short time stayed in the building, a section of which is now under Church of the Virgin Mary today. Later John moved the Virgin Mary to a house he had prepared for her on Bulbul Dagi (Bulbul… [cont.]

A. The purpose of the pope is to create new forms of mind control, and to give it a loveable face so people can just think this "holy, virginal man" is hearing directly from God, when in reality its just the church trying to push their agendas unto the masses.

A. Their body is placed in a sarcophagus in the Vatican grottoes beneath the main floor of St Peters Basilica. There is no post mortem carried out. The Camerlengo (chamberlain) makes sure the Pope is dead by tapping on his forehead with a small silver hammer three times while calling out his baptismal name "Albine, dormisne?". (White One, do you sleep?) Exhuming a body is one part of the canonization process

Should Pope Joan finally be recognised by the Vatican and included in the official list of Popes?
Q. John Anglicus was an English woman who became Pope in the year 850. She was a woman of intellect who dressed as a man to enter University, later entering the priesthood and was elected Pope. She was murdered by the Catholic citizens of Rome when she gave birth to a child. Although recognised as Pope at first, the Catholic Church now refuse to recognise her Papal reign. She was real and the real answers lie hidden in the Vatican's secret archives. Her Holiness Pope Joan was airbrushed from history by an anti-female Church.

A. The Pope is anti abortion (McCain) anti war (Obama) and favors nanny state programs to help the poor (Clinton). Being Pope he does not need to compromise but as a voter he would. My guess is that he would vote for McCain and then opposes most of his policies because the abortion choice is more clear cut.
