The world's principal religions and spiritual traditions may be classified into a small number of major groups, although this is by no means a uniform practice. This theory began in the 18th century with the goal of recognizing the relative levels of civility in non-European societies. However, it quickly transformed into a subset of the universalist belief that all religious figures teach of a single, cross-cultural truth.

For a more comprehensive list of religions and an outline of some of their basic relationships, please see the article list of religions.

History of religious categories

In world cultures, there have traditionally been many different groupings of religious belief. In Indian culture, different religious philosophies were traditionally respected as academic differences in pursuit of the same truth. In Islam, the Qur'an mentions three different

What religions put emphasis and power in the individuals?
Q. Many religions seem to tell followers what to do, how to do it, and what not to do. Also in many religions, the theme is to worship a higher power- to do everything for it and in it's name. To accept it (or submit and fear it) over yourself and over things you hold dear (family, life, possessions, etc). In my opinion, those aspects are against what nature stands for. Are there any religions that embrace everything humans are? Are there any that put emphasis and power into the individual instead of into a higher power?

How do the beliefs of various religions compare?
Q. Is there a website that compares the beliefs of the different religions? It would also be interesting to see how beliefs have changed over time. For example, 500 years ago the Christian religion believed the Earth was the center of the Universe and people could quote scripture to prove it. Now, that is not the predominant belief.

A. Well... you can say that all religion attribute things to God with no evidence or false claims. For example the Christians believe in the trinity. Islam gives you the only possible scientific description of God. [112:1] Proclaim, "He is the One and only GOD. [112:2] "The Absolute GOD. [112:3] "Never did He beget. Nor was He begotten. --- Also... [6:100] Yet, they set up beside GOD idols from among the jinns, though He is the One who created them. They even attribute to Him sons and daughters, without any knowledge. Be He glorified. He is the Most High, far above their claims. [6:101] The Initiator of the heavens and the earth. How can He have a son, when He never had a mate? He created all things, and He is fully aware of… [cont.]

How do different religions interpret the beliefs of others?
Q. Religious beliefs seem almost entirely based on where you grow up and live. Just a random coincidence that you happened to be born to this or that parent in this or that region of the world. For Christianity I guess there is the whole 12 tribe deal, from what I can remember, probably mistaken. How do the major religions answer this question of "Why are we correct in our beliefs and those other billion people across the globe are completely mistaken?"

A. Most of the different religions interpret other beliefs from their own point of view. This includes using their own definitions of terms that may have an entirely different meaning in another belief system. One of the most notable exceptions is Hinduism. Hinduism is different because it incorporates every belief system that it encounters into itself. That's just talking about religions... Some individuals can be a bit more flexible.
